Fire Drill
Today we had a fire drill. It was just like a normal fire drill until it was time to go inside. Everybody was walking off the field when the fire alarm went off again. (Take two) Ms. Ferranti’s class sat down very quietly and played a silent game just with each other while every other class talked loudly and played a game with Mr. Hogle. They told us it was ok to go in the building again, when the fire alarm went off again! (Take three) It stopped after thirty seconds or so. Then we were told we were allowed to go in, again. This time we actually went in. Ms. Ferranti was so proud of us for being quiet that she gave us two paperclips. We were all so happy the fire alarm didn’t go off, again! (Good thing too, it would have been take four) February 27, 2008 Today in Ms. Ferranti's class we did science tasks. We copied a picture of the moon and learned about the new moon and waxing and waning. We also did a chart saying that the earth is going around the sun. The chart has a sun in the middle and there are different seasons around the sun. That was our day in the Lair!

The Sun and the Earth
If you love astronomy then go to D-29, The Lair. Today the class learned about the moon. The class learned what the moon looked like at different angles. Ms. Ferranti drew a chart showing the phases of our moon, Luna. The first phase is not the waxing crescent. It’s actually the New Moon. The class learned about when it’s waxing. The second phase was the Waxing Crescent which came at about 4 days after the New Moon. The next phase they learned about was the Quarter Moon. Ms. Ferranti told them it came at about day 7. They were on to the Waxing Gibbous phase. It would be at about day 10. Next, came the Full Moon, at about day 14. Almost done with the chart, they got to the Waning Gibbous. The Waning Gibbous phase would be at day 17 roughly. Onto the Final Quarter which is the name of the phase. The Final Quarter would be at day 20 the chart shows. It’s at the Waning Crescent and the chart was so close to being done. 24 days would be about how long it would take. It came back to the New Moon Phase and at 28 days which is about 1 lunar month. (A lunar month is 29.53 days.) Ms. Ferranti really helped the students learn the phases and then one student asked a brilliant question. The question was: how can you see the full moon if the earth is blocking it? Ms. Ferranti answered, “The sun, moon, and earth do not always line up perfectly. The sunlight goes over the earth making you able to see the moon which is reflecting the sun’s light."
February 12, 2008 Today in school miss Mary came in to teach us art. She taught us how to draw valentines day teddy bears! She would draw her teddy bear in steps and then she would teach us how to draw them in steps to. When everyone in the class finished we put all of the teddy bears together. They were all so cute when they were lined up on the board together. There were fluffy ones, fat ones, skinny ones, stitched ones, and even ones sitting on clouds.
Reported by Buzzy February, 11, 2008 Happy Chinese New Year! Our class today learned about Chinese New Year in class today, if you want to learn too, either ask the students ( you should probably ask Carina, her mom taught us about it.). Or if you know them, the Lee family, Carina and her mom taught us about Chinese New Year. First they taught about the traditions of the Chinese on their new year, such as the lunar calendar and the foods. Next they taught us about things that they do on Chinese new year, Third they let us taste the food, finally they taught us about the years and how the lunar calendar works. Learning about other celebrations helps us understand other cultures, but many of us knew a lot about Chinese new year already, “ maybe I won’t have to teach you about Chinese new year after all!’’ said Ms. Lee.
February,5th, 2008 The Evil Stanford Test! The evil Stanford test came to Ms. Ferranti’s classroom on Monday, and returned on Tuesday! The kids groaned and snored. It was because the even more evil W.A.S.L was coming, the test was preparing them for the W.A.S.L. . So the Stanford was pretty much just practice, but harder. First the word study monsters were released on the children, the kids were scared that the monsters were going to beat them, but they fought with knowledge magic and the monsters fell! Sergio, an apprentice, said “ It was fun, but hard.” Then on Tuesday they had to fight the reading and reading comprehension monsters that had appeared. “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,” screamed Carinna . Mark, a knowledge wizard apprentice, used the knowledge blast spell on a reading monster. His master, Buzzy, was very proud of him. Then Carinna and Buzzy worked together and used the knowledge tornado spell on the monsters. The students have more to come, but they have braved two days of the Stanford already, and with Ms. Ferranti as the senior master, they are being well taught and feel prepared for the rest of the test. Reported by Carinna. Do you like writing? If so, head down to Ms.Ferranti’s fourth grade classroom. Today, they worked on writing their news paper articles about their winter break. The newspaper had to include at least three main articles and at least some fun games and puzzles to solve. Some kids even did weather reports. "Most of the kids in my class can’t believe how hard news paper article people have to work." Carinna tells the reporters. It’s really just plain fun. Oh-oh, seems that we have better things to do than standing around chatting. Be sure to see your local news paper!
