PLATE TECTONICS

On January 30, 2008, Ms. Ferranti’s class was learning about Plate Tectonics in Science.  It seems it would be hard to learn by the name of it, but it is quite simple.  The class learned about what happens when different plates collide, or come together.

An example would be, when two plates, an oceanic plate and a continental plate collide, the oceanic plate would, because it is denser, sink down into the Magma below the plates and melt.  And the continental plate would slide over the oceanic plate.

Another example is when two continental plates collide.  They are both the same density so they crinkle into each other and produce mountains and earthquakes.  The Himalayan Mountain Range is still growing taller because of the continental plates colliding.  And that is what Ms. Ferranti’s class learned on Jan. 30th.

Cool Café

If you want to hear some cool stories then head down to Ms. Ferranti`s class room to have a lot of fun. Today we had Authors' café.  First we listened to carina’s story and it was about these warriers and next Naoki's story but Naoki was absent so Claire P. read it. Then Taylor's was next, then Nohea, and finally Chandler's but Kasie read it for her.  This is helping us learn how to read better and the cool thing is that we get popcorn and apples. It was the best.  it is so much fun, and it was so cool to hear all of these great stories.

Today in science we are learning about the earth. We are learning about the crust, mantle, outer core, and the inner core.  It is fun because we get to learn about what we are standing on every second of our lives.  We also get to learn about volcanoes, earthquakes, and rocks.

Today in the lair we went to a Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly. A person had us sing songs. It was fun because we got to sing songs that we had never herd before. It was also fun because we got to copy some words in the song. For example if he said, "I don’t know what I’ve been told. Washington is 5 years old," we would echo it back.

On Friday, I got to have Friday free time because I had all my homework turned in and I turned in my revisions from last Friday! At free time, Nohea, Claire, Taryn, and I all wrote on white boards. We drew pictures, we played games, and we had FUN! That day we also had a sub.  When this sub comes, instead of smiley’s she gives out GOLDEN TICKETS. You’ll only get a golden ticket if you don’t talk, do your work, and be good. At the end of the day I found out that I GOT A GOLDEN TICKET! On Friday, the class and I didn’t know why Ms. Ferranti wasn’t there. We were really surprised when she didn’t show up because Ms. Ferranti is mostly always here. At the end of the day I felt like I had a great day! Friday was fun!

Reporting about social studies

Today in social studies we had a reporting review.  Each team got a poster about explorers, pioneers, vocabulary, fur trappers, and Lewis and Clark.  We each had to say something that was true, important, and what we learned about it.  Each team did a great job and I thought the teams did a really fantastic job.  The Leopards explained how the fur traders trapped and caught animals. The Jaguars gave everyone an individual speaking part. The Lions did great at naming the places where all they explorers came from. The Tigers told all of us about Lewis and Clark's journey. Cougars did a great job with telling everyone about explorers and what skills they used to reach their destination. My team, the Panthers, did a great job at giving examples about the words interpreter and stockade. I think everyone gave a good report about their subjects.

Today at the Lair, we were two hours late due to the weather.  Since we didn’t have much time, we only had math, social studies and read-a-loud.  In social studies, we learned about why missionaries came to Washington.  They came to Washington to share their religion.  In read-a-loud we continued to read Maniac Magee.  An old guy died.  His name was Grayson and he was a big help to Maniac.  That was today….stay tuned for tomorrow!

Snow School

At my school the school started two hours late because Sunset Elementary, which is the school I go to, had icy roads around it.  Many people played in the snow at their house. A lot of people read too.  Some of them played video games & watched TV. I was one of those people.  When we got to school we basically went directly to the library to start our school day.

Math in the Lair

Today in the lair we learned a method to solve a division problem using multiplication. It was very fun because I've never solved a division problem using multiplication.  When i talked to Irene she said it was like guess and check because you guess what number you're going to multiply, and then you see if it was close enough or too small or too big.  I want to do another problem using the same method because I really enjoyed it at school.

Today was Friday and we had a fun day! My favorite thing was social studies. We pretended that half the class was fur traders and they were employers and half of the other class was employees. We set up chairs around the outside of the room and that's where the employers sat. Then we put chairs on the insides of the room and that's where the employees sat. We had interviews and the employers asked questions like, " How long have you been doing fur trading?" I was an employer and I thought that it was really fun.

Incredible Skits of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Do you like to learn about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and act out skits? Well, if you do, then head off to Ms. Ferranti's class the Lair at D29!
Today in the Lair, the class did skits about the Lewis and Clark Expedition! First, Ms. Ferranti, the teacher, gave each table a piece of paper that contains information about parts of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Then, each table practiced acting out that piece of information. There are four people in each table, so it was kind of hard when there were many characters. But it was very fun to act and pretend. Finally, when all the teams had finished practicing and preparing for their skits, it was time for each team to act out in  front of the whole class. The first team to act was the Panthers. They were acting the part when the Corps (what the people of the expedition were called) were rowing upstream on the Missouri River. They had some difficulties, but they made it through though one person died. The next team was the Lions. They were acting the part when The Corps met Interpreter Toussaint Charbonneau and his Indian wife Sacagawea. The Corps hired Charbonneau and Sacagawea as their guide and their interpreter. The next skit was by the Jaguars. The Jaguars were acting the time when the grizzly bears were attacking. The grizzly bears were one of the most  dangerous enemy of the Corps. They would chase them up trees and even into the water sometimes.  The next skit was by the Tigers. They acted the part when the Corps reached the Great Falls. They had to carry their boats to get across! There were flies, gnats, mosquitoes, and lots of other bugs near the Great Falls that caused some trouble. The next team to act was the Cougars. They acted the part where they met Sacagawea's brother who gave them horses to ride across the Rocky Mountains. It was hard to get across mountains by land back then. The last team to act was the Leopards! They were acting the part when the Corps reached the Pacific Ocean. They were very happy to reach it.
The skits were finally over! it has been very fun and funny. It has also been great lesson. The Lair had a fantastic day!

Virtual Lewis and Clark Expedition

Today in computer lab we went on an expedition with Lewis and Clark as our captains. Along the way we had to answer questions to help complete the mission. First, you have to give your name. Second, is a question asking if you would bring enough food for the journey or books with blank paper. Third, is an Indian tribe attacks you, should you abandon all the goods or should you stay. Forth, you meet Sacagawea and it asks you should let her come. What would you do? Fifth, you have to decide if you should go south or north in a v in the river. Sixth, you have to think about, on a mountain there is a snowstorm and you have to figure out if you are going to wait until spring or go onward. Finally, you are at the Pacific Ocean and you have completed the journey.

If this Journey seems interesting to you, you can do it too! Here is the journey.  http://www.nationalgeographic.com/west/index.html.

Today we did social studies. We learned about explorers going to North America to find gold, otter hair and other treasures on the land. We were trying to find out if there was a water pathway to go to North America. We read in our Washington Adventure books. We learned that there was no water pathway. It was a lot of fun!

 Rock and Roll!

Today the lair went to an assembly called “Rock and Roll”. It was not actual music, but rocks. First we meet Eve and Steve from the Pacific Science Center (PSC).   Suddenly out of nowhere pops out Mr. Merrill, Ms. Ness, Somebody I don’t know, and Steve. Their all rock stars, singing “I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL!”We also learned all about rocks, plate tectonics, how rocks get underground, and much more!  We had to say bye to our new friends and head back to our class. L

At the end of the day Ms. Ferranti took poll on the assembly, I saw a lot of threes and a few fours!J I also saw that a lot of people liked it in different classes too! You should have been here for this, and if you were I hope you had fun and learned a lot! J How many things did you learn for the assembly today?

Math review

If you want to learn about math, head to Mrs. Ferranti’s classroom, we reviewed the lattice method today.  Mrs. Ferranti gave us examples on the board.  Then we took a quiz.  The lattice method helps us multiply without having to put zero’s at the end.
