Word Study Contract
For each day, sort your words first. Then choose one activity. Completed work is due the following school day, and word study work will not be accepted early. Do one activity each day! Monday Spelling Practice: Write your spelling words 2x each in print, and 2x each in cursive Rainbow Spelling: Write all of your words – consonants in red and vowels in blue. Alphabetical Order: Put your spelling words in alphabetical order. Remember to write in cursive. Number Order: Write your spelling words in order from the one with the most letters to the one with the least letters. In case of ties, put the tied words in ABC Order. Word Triangle: Write a word triangle for 10 of the spelling words, for example: c Tuesday Grid It: Using a grid, connect as many spelling words as you can! Begin by writing one of your words in the center of grid paper. The word may be written horizontally or vertically. Write your second word, so it intersects the first word, and so on. Make a Code: Come up with a code for 10 of your words (example: a=1, b-2…) and write your words in code. Include a code key so Ms. Ferranti can decipher it! Spelling Cut-Ups: Write 10 spelling words. Then spell the words using letters cut from magazines and newspapers. Glue them next to the correct word. Spelling Chart: Choose any 10 of your words, and answer each question: a) Number of letters? b) Number of consonants? c) Number of vowels? d) Number of syllables? Organize the information in a chart. Rainbow Parts of Speech: Write your words in colors according to which part of speech they are (if it can be more than one, you can write it in more than one color!). Use a dictionary to help you. {Nouns=green, verbs=blue, adjectives=purple, adverbs=red, other=orange} Wednesday Sentences: Use three of your words in declarative statements, three in interrogative statements, and three in exclamatory statements, 1 as a command. Synonyms: Choose any 10 of your spelling words and search for a synonym for each. Use a dictionary to help you. Antonyms: Choose any 10 of your spelling words and search for an antonym for each. Use a dictionary to help you. Picture It: Make a picture dictionary for at least 10 of your spelling words. Write the word and, next to the word, draw or create a picture to define it. Thursday Tongue Twisters: Write tongue twisters for at least10 of your words. Highlight your spelling word. For example: Many men manage money well. Story Time. Use at least 10 of your spelling words in a story or poem. Be sure to highlight your spelling words. Word Riddles: Write questions or riddles for at least 10 spelling words. The answer will be one of the spelling words. For example. What animal can be mooooooody? A cow Newspaper Headlines: Come up with 10 newspaper headlines using at least 12 of your spelling words.
